Ashley Everett has been dancing beside Beyoncé for as long as we can remember. Always side by side with the Queen at some of her most iconic tours and of course onstage at the Formation Tour performing “Single Ladies” when Beyoncé stopped the music and called her then boyfriend John Silver to the stage.
Beyoncé doesn’t share her stage with just anybody so this moment was solidified in time as one of the most epic parts of her tour and for that reason went viral.
In the heat of the moment, Everett said yes but three years later the couple has called it quits.
And after much speculation, Ashley is now revealing why she ended her engagement.
The dancers met while dancing for Ne-Yo and hit it off right away. Ashley was 21 and had just moved to LA from New York.
Everett told Essence that she was definitely taken out out her element when John took to the stage to propose.
“When I’m on stage, I’m a different character than I am in my everyday life. I felt vulnerable, and all the attention and cameras were on me. I was like a turtle wanting to crawl in my shell. I’m low key, so I was shocked completely. When I’m on stage, I’m a different character than I am in my everyday life. I felt vulnerable, and all the attention and cameras were on me. I was like a turtle wanting to crawl in my shell. I’m low key, so I was shocked completely.”
She goes on to say that after the proposal she had gotten on an emotional rollercoaster. What was supposed to be one of the happiest times in her life was also one of the worst.
In 2016, she had been a victim of identity theft while rehearsing and getting ready to go on tour with Beyoncé. She was supposed to be planning a wedding but her mind was completely somewhere else.
“Looking back on it now, I feel like, had we been more connected, that timing probably would not have happened then. I wasn’t in the mindset to be planning a wedding. I’m over here dealing with fraud!”
IT WAS OVER
While most women are ecstatic to pick out all the little details like flowers. silverware and patterns, Ashley felt overwhelmed. So, they decided to take some time to enjoy their engagement but then the next year rolled around, and she went on tour and found herself making excuses for why she wasn’t planning more.
She started asking herself .. ‘Do I really want to be married, or do I even want to marry him? Am I really happy? Do I need to work on me before I take this leap?’ The time, distance and selflessness to keep their relationship going was more than she was able to give.
She realized they had different goals and dreams workwise, and their friendship was fading away. Ultimately the couple took a break that turned into a break up.
I needed to be a little selfish. It was time for Ashley to date Ashley.”
Realizing she had been in a relationship since she was 21, she knew it was time to fall in love with herself and be open to love coming along with that.
Because of the public proposal people started to catch on pretty quick when they no longer saw her engagement ring or the couple being spotted together. But Ashley says she is ok with her decision.
She relying on her tight circle and her talents to go after everything she’s wanted in the world and encourages others to do the same.
