Beyoncé opened the memorial to Kobe and Gianna Bryant with a beautiful rendition to one of the late NBA legend’s favorite songs, “XO”.
It was last month when Kobe Bryant, 41 and daughter Gianna Bryant, 13 died along with 7 others: John Altobelli, his wife, Keri, and their daughter, Alyssa; Payton Chester and her mother, Sarah; youth basketball coach Christina Mauser; and helicopter pilot Ara Zobayan in a helicopter crash in Calabassas, Ca on their way to a basketball game for Gianna.
Introduced as a close friend of the Bryant family, and backed by a choir of singers and musicians the Beyoncé respectfully changing some of the original lyrics.
Beyoncé changed “And I’m crashing into you” to “And I’m laughing into you” and swapped “You kill me boy XO” for “Just kiss me boy XO.”
The singer also performed “Halo” with the added line, “He will be your, she will be your halo,” a reference to Kobe and Gianna.
Other performers included Alicia Keys who performed Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,” which Lakers executive and Kobe’s best friend Rob Pelinka said Kobe learned to play by ear for his wife years ago as a show of love. Later, Christina Aguilera performed “Ave Maria” with an orchestra.
